-1984 = Dystopian book about a society of total surveilance and constant war
*The world that we live in
-1984 = The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labor. War is a way of shattering to pieces... materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.

-1984 - Total surveilance. Telescreens listen to you and watch you all the time. Hidden microphones everywhere. All written communication is routinely opened and read by government before it is delivered. People are encouraged to report each other for unacceptable opinions. Sometimes, even having the wrong facial expression could lead to arrest and imprisonment.
*Your TV can listen to you, can be activated remotely without the owner ever noticing.
*Smartphones record GPS location data, microphone/camera can also be activated remotely and without the knowledge of the user.

*Most computers suffer from the same and ever bigger weaknesses.
*All telecommunications traffic (phone calls, internet traffic) is stored on government servers as metadata that can and will be used against you.

-1984 = All independent thought and individualism different from the state's propaganda is considered a thought crime. The mere act of thinking it is enough. No need to write it down or even say it out loud because the second it crosses your mind, it's only a matter of time before the thought police come after you. Once they do, you simply disappear, with every record of your existence wiped out and vaporized.
*People being arrested/facing jail for facebook posts and tweets.

*Consensus amongst the majority of societies about most ideas - shaped by mass media (often directly dictated by the state).

*The mere act of expressing a different opinion can cause loss of friends / job / social status.

*Therefore people will censor themselves and keep controversial opinions to themselves.

Still not quite 1984, but we are getting there.
-1984 = Memory hole. When a fact is uncomfortable for the state, it is destroyed and all historical records that are connected to that fact are altered to match the new reality
